Latar belakang


Avatar: The Legend of Aang mengambil tempat di sebuah dunia fantasi, tempat tinggal manusia, berbagai binatang fantastik, dan roh-roh. Peradaban manusia terbagi-bagi menjadi empat bangsa, Suku Air (Water Tribe), Kerajaan Bumi (Earth Kingdom), Pengembara Udara (Air Nomads), dan Negara Api (Fire Nation). Dalam setiap bangsa ada orang-orang yang dipanggil Bender (secara harfiah berarti "Pembengkok", namun dalam hal ini dianggap "Pengendali") yang memiliki kemampuan mengendalikan unsur alam sesuai bangsa mereka. Seni mengendalikan unsur alam ini merupakan perpaduan gaya seni beladiri dan sihir unsur alam.

Dalam setiap generasi, ada seseorang yang mampu mengendalikan setiap unsur, ialah yang dipanggil sebagai Avatar, roh dari planet yang menitis dalam bentuk manusia. Ketika seorang Avatar meninggal dunia, dia akan terlahir kembali di bangsa yang gilirannya selalu bergantian sesuai dengan siklus Avatar, yang seiring dengan musim: musim dingin untuk air, musim semi untuk tanah, musim panas untuk api, dan musim gugur untuk udara. Legenda mengatakan bahwa seorang Avatar harus mempelajari seni mengendalikan unsur sesuai dengan urutannya, dimulai dengan unsur asli bangsa sang Avatar, namun terkadang urutan ini bisa dilewat jika keadaan memaksa. Mempelajari pengendalian unsur yang berlawanan dengan unsur asli bangsa seseorang adalah hal yang teramat sulit karena perbedaan gaya seni beladiri dan doktrin-doktrinnya.

Seabad sebelum pembukaan cerita serial ini, Aang, seorang anak laki-laki pengendali angin berusia 12 tahun dari Kuil Udara Selatan milik kaum Pengembara Udara, diberitahu oleh para tetua bahwa ia adalah "Sang Avatar". Biasanya, seorang Avatar diberitahu jati dirinya sebagai seorang Avatar ketika ia beranjak 16 tahun, namun, para biksu takut akan perang yang terjadi diantara keempat bangsa akan segera terjadi dan dalam waktu singkat seorang Avatar akan diperlukan untuk menjaga keseimbangan dan kedamaian dunia. Hal ini membuat Aang sangat kebingungan dan tertekan. Singkat cerita, Aang kabur dari Kuil Udara Selatan, namun di tengah jalan ia bertemu dengan badai yang sangat besar dan ia bersama Appa (seekor banteng terbang raksasa miliknya) jatuh tenggelam ke dalam laut. Tetapi Aang segera membuat bola udara mengitari tubuhnya dan Appa sehingga ia tidak basah. Bola udara tersebut membekukan air di sekitarnya sehingga Aang dan Appa terkurung di dalam bongkahan es.

Serial Avatar banyak meminjam seni dan mitologi dari benua Asia untuk menciptakan sebuah dunia fiksi. Avatar juga mencampur filosopi, bahasa, agama, seni bela diri, pakaian, dan budaya dari negara-negara Asia seperti misalnya Cina, Jepang, Mongolia, Korea, India, dan Tibet. Penampilan Suku Air kelihatannya dipengaruhi oleh budaya Inuit. Secara terang-terangan dapat ditemukan pengaruh dari seni dan sejarah China, anime Jepang, Hinduisme, Taoisme, Buddhisme,[1] dan Yoga.[2] Staf produksi memperkerjakan konsultan budaya, Edwin Zane, untuk meninjau naskah cerita.

[sunting] Arti dari istilah Avatar

Istilah Avatar berasal dari bahasa Sanskerta, yaitu Avatāra, yang berarti "turun". Dalam mitologi Hindu, para dewa memanifestasikan dirinya dengan turun menjelma ke dunia untuk mengembalikan keseimbangan di muka bumi setelah mengalami zaman kejahatan, dan mereka disebut Sang Avatar. Aksara Cina yang muncul di atas kata "Avatar" pada pembukaan cerita berarti "Perantara Tuhan yang turun ke dunia fana".[3]

Ketika Aang masih kecil, ia tahu bahwa dirinya adalah seorang Avatar saat memilih empat mainan di antara ribuan mainan lainnya. Empat mainan tersebut adalah mainan yang sama dengan yang dipilih oleh para Avatar dari generasi sebelumnya ketika masih kecil, dan membuktikan bahwa Aang adalah reinkarnasi dari Avatar. Ini merupakan ujian yang sama dengan yang dilakukan oleh anak-anak Buddha di Tibet untuk menguji apakah ia merupakan reinkarnasi Tulku Lama. Menurut buku "Keajaiban dan Misteri di Tibet" karya Alexandra David-Néel, “beberapa benda seperti misalnya jimat, peralatan upacara, buku, cangkir teh,[4] dan lain-lain ditaruh bersama-sama, dan sang anak akan mengambil benda-benda, yang mana merupakan kepunyaan Tulku terdahulu, dan hal tersebut menunjukkan bahwa ia mengenali ingatannya pada kehidupannya yang terdahulu”[5]. Situs resmi Avatar mengatakan, the successor is expected to show signs of continuity with the previous Avatar, such as being born within a week of the death.

June 30, 2008 - This episode was an interesting concept, with some interesting characters. The idea behind our main characters seeing what means most to them, except for Aang who sees a person he has never seen was intriguing and great to watch. But, it wasn't enough for me to enjoy it the way I have enjoyed season two thus far.

I was expecting much more from what I saw in the opening scene of this episode, but as the show went on, I found myself feeling more and more let down. Everything leading up to the final battle with the gang and a giant swamp monster was ho-hum. It was cool seeing the three of them work together to defeat the man in the swamp suit, but again I thought the whole episode lacked substance.

Also, what kind of Benders were the swamp people? Air, Water, Swamp? I never got a clear sense of whom they truly were. During the Apa chance scene I became confused, and then watching the giant swamp monster in action, I had no idea how they were doing what they did. For a show that pays so much attention to detail and story, they really fell short in that department.

This wasn't so much a filler episode because it did have purpose, but that purpose took 20 minutes to get to. 20 minutes that could have been cut out so you would have a nice tight 4-minute episode. Plus it was a little too hippie preachy for my liking. I love the Earth as much as the next guy, but I don't need a whole episode telling me about it, I already saw An Inconvenient Truth.

Don't get me wrong, then episode wasn't horrible by any means, it just wasn't as good as the previous episodes in season two, thus giving it the appearance of a mediocre episode, and leaving (to quote the late great George Carlin a "Hippie-Dippy" taste in my mouth.

Also put a smurf avatar in his inventory in case he wants something completely different.

It looks nothing like him IRL. But his Neo outfit is pretty cool. And dig those tinted shades.

Maybe now that he has a few landmarks, lindens and other scripted goodies he could find or even create his own style. I hope I have been able to get his look right .“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free” (Michelangelo) ha ha!

It’s a bit like buying a birthday present for someone. Sometimes you get so excited when you’re out shopping that you end up buying what you want instead!

Whether I am adding songs to my LastFM, or books to my Facebook, or clothes on my avatar, or words on my blog or twitter ….

I certainly hope I am embedding and not so much embellishing my identity.

I hope my choice of flavour does not seem pretentious to others, as much as a reflection of my own perception to myself.

Authentic voices in a mashed-up reality

I’m not completely cynical, really! The authentic voices are great and I’ve met some wonderful people through this mashed up reality! Embedding our identity in a digital form can do wonders to know ourselves and others a little better in this supersonically-paced (and often anonymous) world.

Embellishing identity (with wild untruths) on the other hand…well, I’m not sure how helpful that is. Embedding identity can still be playful and creative, without distorting the essence of “you”. I think!?

And to some, it doesn’t matter at all! Vanilla is as good as it gets.

Augmenting Motherhood

At this stage of my life I am working part time and caring for our three little “monkeys” under the age of five. You know what? I’m so glad things have turned out this way. I think women who are full-time mothers do an amazing, awesome job. Personally I also love being able to work part-time doing something I enjoy. I go a bit stir-crazy at home all day

I especially love the power of social media to connect with a global workforce, when I have less time than other co-workers. It makes it easier to keep up-to-date and collaborate with colleagues - without having to trawl through email. I find I am less likely to miss out on thought leadership in the organisation, because I can read about it on a blog or listen to it on a podcast. I love the fact that “it’s not what you know but who you know” is less about schmoozing these days and more about tagging.

I’m connected to some vibrant minds, news, links and events via the power of blogging and twitter at odd times of the day. I am not as dependent on “real-time” communication. I have the opportunity to occasionally work from home - saving time in transit and giving me flexibility to work around family needs. I am meeting like-minded colleagues from the other side of the globe in Secondlife. I enjoy my work and the special projects I help out on. A lot. Sometimes work seems like play.

I have known young women to consider working in fields such as nursing and teaching to have better opportunities for work/life balance and careers post-motherhood. I hope that blogging and other social media opens up opportunities for women to work in many other equally rewarding and admirable (and male dominated) areas, and in senior roles, so that women don’t limit their potential by a pre-conceived notion of a “balanced” career.

Needless to say I am enjoying the monkeys while they are young, although I’m not about to pretend it’s easy. Pre-school years are busy and wondrous. They amaze me every day. I’m very blessed.
